Helping Ellie Walk

A Gift from the Shriners

June 21st, 2008 by Southern Grandma

Ellie is going to the Shriners Hospital in Minneapolis on June 30th. She’s got a whole day packed full of appointments with different doctors and other medical personnel … from occupational and physiotherapists to an orthopedic surgeon. The day starts at 9:30 in the morning, and the last appointment is at 4pm. A very full day!

Yesterday she got a present in the mail from them.

They sent her a little denim tote bag personalized with her first name and full of goodies.

I think that is the coolest thing. It was totally unexpected, and such a nice gesture.

After Ellie is checked out by the various experts, they’ll tell her parents what they have available to help Ellie. Most of it will probably be in the way of equipment, like a wheelchair. They will also check with them about surgery options, but unless they find out differently while visiting, previous research suggests that St. Louis Children’s Hospital is the better choice for the type of surgery Ellie needs to help her walk.

It will be a busy day for Ellie and her Mom and Dad, but hopefully a beneficial one too!
